I have a red ranger chick with no energy and is breathing heavily. She is just laying in the shavings with her eyes closed breathing heavily. When I pic her up she won't even peep really. She tries byt no sound comes out or if it does it is a tiny sound. She also will just lay on her side in my hands. She doesn't even try to get up let alone get away. Is there anything I can do?

Are you familiar with egg binding? To your knowledge has she been eating/drinking? How does her poop look? Any other birds displaying ill symptoms? Any swelling or hardness in abdomen area, look at her vent anything unusual?

Well it is hard to tell all those things being that we currently have 86 chicks, but she is similarly sized, and I haven't noticed any of them not eating or drinking. No other chicks are acting this way.

How old is the chick? Could it have coccidiosis? I think rangers are meat chickens, but have they been on medicated feed? Symptoms of cocci are lethargy, diarrhea (sometimes with blood,) puffing up or huddling, ruffled feathers on back of neck, and poor eating. Treatment is Corid/amprollium liquid 2 tsp per gallon of water or powder 1.5 tsp per gallon for 5 days. I would get this chick warm, and feed some electrolytes or buttermilk until you get Corid.

So she is about 9 days old I segregated her, we will see I guess

Sadly, I had a bird go this way! We weren't sure what was wrong with her. I discovered her standing, eyes closed, in the run. When I brought her inside, she just got weaker and could no longer stand. She died a few hours later. She was maybe 14 weeks old at that point, though. I'd be interested to hear if you pinpoint the cause or are able to treat.

Sorry,i just realized your bird is a chick(i thought she was older, hence the egg binding question)treat for Coccidiosis as Eggcessive suggested. Has she been able to poop? No sign of pasty butt? What type of feed is she on?

She is dead. About an hour ago she couldn't stand and a few minutes ago I picked her up and her head flopped in a complete circle she was still breathing I tried to wake her but she wouldn't. Her breathing slowed till it almost stopped so I took her outside and finished her off. :( poor little chicky

Keep a close eye on the rest, if any more start acting lethargic start treating with Corid asap. Not saying that's what this one had, may have just been failure to thrive, who knows, but it bears watching closely and being ready to treat.
