Hi all,

I am a little worried for one of my girls - Flossie. Since yesterday afternoon she has been randomly lying down and overall acting much less energetically. I originally thought that she was tired, but she still seems odd and it's been almost twenty four hours. Thankfully I have seen her poop, but she looks a bit skinny. Should I contact my avian vet? Do you know what could be wrong?

Some other symptoms are: She does not peep or struggle when held (she used to), she stays away from the other chicks in the corner (not under the heat), She doesn't run as fast if I try to catch her

Any help is appreciated!

Just saw her eating and behaving with slightly more energy, but I am still worried. They are two weeks old and the coldest parts of the brooder are 70 degrees, is this too hot?

Since you have an avian vet, could you call and see what he suggests?

Unless she is doing a lot of panting, I don't think heat is the issue with her. With young chicks, it can be difficult to know what is bothering them. Are they in an indoor or outdoor brooder? If they are indoors what is the temperature in the room?

Have you seen her drinking and eating? Sometimes other chicks may bully them away . You might try giving her a finely mashed hard boiled egg, moistened with a bit of plain yogurt to see if you can bring some enthusiasm into the picture. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Thank you Diva,

She is breathing heavily a bit (no panting), but she is doing better. The brooder is indoors in a spare bathroom. The room is never over 70 degrees, and it tends to run cold where I live. I have recently seen her eating and even joining the other chicks in a mealworm frenzy, but she is otherwise sitting in the corner and obviously removed from the others. Thanks for the hardboiled egg advice, I can try it in the morning.
