My chicken is acting weak and sick. I found her just laying in the coop this afternoon, which is not normal. If I get her up she will walk a few steps spread her wings and collapse. She then just lays there. Her head is up and she’ll eat and drink. I have found no injuries on her. I don’t worm my chickens and have seen no obvious signs in their stool. I did see her poop after finding her today and it was watery. Also, I don’t know if it’s relevant but she hasn’t laid an egg for three days and a few days leading up to that her eggs were bumpy with calcium like deposits. Finally, about a month ago another one of our chickens was behaving much in the same way. We ended up putting her down because unlike this one she wasn’t eating or drinking and with the limp body behavior I thought she was possibly injured. Now I’m wondering if was the same thing happening now, just further along. Does this sound like it could be Coccidiosis?

Sorry about your hen. How old is she and what breed is she? Do you have any pictures of her poop? She might be having some type of reproductive disorder or infection. Coccidiosis usually is more common in young chickens, but it could be a possibility. Is there any way you can see a vet or take in some droppings to test? Is she holding her tail up or down? Have you wormed your chickens recently? Could they have gotten into molded feed or a compost bed? If you should lose her, I would get a necropsy done by your state poultry lab. Can you get her drinking some electrolytes with vitamins, and offer some wet chicken feed and bits of cooked egg?
