Hey everyone, I posted not too long ago about my group having coccidia, not everyone at the time had it,but only 2 out of 5. Well one of the ones that did not have it the first go around has it again now..or at least I think. The poop was stuck to his butt, and was bloody. After I bathed him he pooped again, and very bloody still. The first go around I treated with sulmet, seemed to work great on the ones that had it. So..I guess I wanna know does this one really have cocidia, and do I just need to treat again with sulmet?? He is 13 weeks, and was never initially on medicated feed. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Well...when my group got it over the summer I treated them and then a short while later the same thing happened to me. The two that didn't have it the first time got it. I treated everyone all over again and super cleaned the coop. They haven't had it since. I would say to go ahead and re-treat your flock so that you don't lose any. My freind lost three to it b/c she wasn't sure what they had and so didn't treat them for anything. Good luck! The second shot of sulmet worked for us.

Thanks Karri25, when you say you cleaned out everything well, how exactly did you do that, and what did you use? My run is all sand, and their house they sleep in is wood...any ideas on how to clean, adn what to use?

Not sure how you can clean sand but a bleach scrub to the wood would work. They are getting it from the sand though as they eat the sand and cocci comes in oocyst form which live in the dirt. Treat again and in the future, you will have to start the chicks on medicated feed as it is a problem in your area.

thanks silkiechicken, I just dusted everything with DE for the first tonight, do you think that will help at all? I will treat first thing in the am, as I think they have started for bed tonight already.

Call me crazy but...I threw everything out of the coop and sprayed it all down with heavy bleach water. I let it dry and then put all new shavings and straw in so there wouldn't be any germs anywhere. I couldn't do anything in their run b/c it was under two inches of water (our yard turns into a swamp when it rains for two weeks!). But it worked the second go round. I'm going to have to do it all over agian now becuae it turns out my babies just got mites:-( I'm waiting for my DH to bring home some sevin dust right now. So sad. I think yours will be fine but definately give them another round of sulmet.

alrighty thanks guys. I also wanted to add in that after I gave it a bath and blow dryed just seemed to huddle in corner and talk, is that normal for a sick roo?

No, no one new, but like said eailer in post I think they picked it up from eating the sand in thier run, must have had coccidia on it from previous, so I guess that would be it. The chickens that had it the first time were new, but that was almost a month ago. This is such a pain in the butt...lol!!
