Hi everyone, went to feed my chickens and one of my girls, Holly, a light sussex about 8months old, is looking very poorly. Her comb is droopy, slightly blueish in places? Has NO appetite at all, not even for her favourites. Could it be a cold? Frost bite? It hasnt been super cold but there has been a drop in temp. Should I Isolate her? What can I do?

We will need a bit more info to help you. Do you know when she last laid? How does her crop feel? Empty, hard, soft and squishy, etc.? What do droppings look like? Does her abdomen feel bloated at all (between legs, below vent), very hard, or water balloon like? Any discharge from nares or beak? Look inside beak to see if it's normal. Any wheezing or other respiratory symptoms? Check her over thoroughly for any wounds or injuries (if any are found pictures help), check for mites or lice. I would isolate her until you get it narrowed down a bit, that will also give you a better chance to observe droppings and such, and she does need to be kept warm if she's ill. Where are you, generally, in the world? That helps sometimes in suggesting things. What do you feed, including treats, and how are they housed? Free range or enclosed run? The more detail you can give the better others can help.

How cold has it been at night where you live? It could be due to her circulation or a heart problem. I would bring her inside to warm up, and offer some water with electrolytes. If you have Poultry NutriDrench, you could give a drop or two orally. Offer some cooked egg, tuna, or wet chicken feed with warm water. Let us know about any other symptoms. Check her crop to feel if it is empty or full, firm or puffy. What do her poops look like? Is she gasping or having labored breathing?

Thanks so much for the replies, I stay in Ireland. We have had a drop in temp -2 during the night. Our part didnt receive any snow. She is in a chicken run and they have a coop for the night. When i went to fetch her (she is in an allotment) she was already in the coop huddled in the corner. And not even perched in her usual place. Her croup feels empty? No heavy breathing or nasal discharge? Tried feeling for a bound egg? Not sure if im doing it correctly. She hasnt been laying for over a week now. And had a quick look for mites and lice didnt see anything? She is at home now in a box, so will monitor her and give her a better look over in the morning. Thanks again for the advice.

To check for a stuck egg, insert one finger inside the vent just an inch. If it is soft, and just feels like tissue, there probably is not an egg. Feel of her lower belly between her legs for enlargement, a spongy or tight belly.

Was there water that was thawed to drink? Can she stand and walk if you pick her up? If would offer some cooked egg and a bit of mushy chicken feed mixed with warm water. Place on a shallow bowl or plate and hold it up to her beak to see. Fluids are more important, so mix a bit of water in everything.

Update: poor Holly is looking worse. I tried feeding her some scrambled egg...she wont even try peck. Thought I'd have a better look at her vent. When I was doing this she started spewing liquid out? What is going on? Does she have a chest infection? What can i do? She hasnt touched the water or the food? and no poo just a slight white mark on the paper. Her croup does feel slightly puffy?
