Neighbor just asked us about vaseline for leg mites... tild her cant treat it now we are in triple digits and the feels like temps are 105°+ .... it is my understanding it prevents the chicken from being able to cool with legs sealed off???
At the same time... isnt it true vasine on legs ans combs ect during extreme cold will cause frost bite NOT protect against it?
Thank you faithful readers!

Never heard it won't let them cool off in Sumner, that makes no sense scientifically. It's not like it's a few inches thick.

And yes, it can actually cause Frost bite.

Sure dont know the science behind it but it was explained to me ( not saying you are wrong!!! Appreciate your reply!) Since chickens expel heat thru their feet and legs they cant do that once vaseline is put under the scales and rubbed on legs. The same principle if people grease up their skin it temprarily closes the pores and cause you to get hot??? Myself for example have never been able to leave face cream on my skin even rubbed in or wear any type foundation makeup... because within 30 min i am sweating on my face so much it will wash the foundation off.. and literally have to wash off creams. A dermatologist told me that it closed my pores and led to me sweating and that it isnt that uncommon and most of the time when he has patients like that they had never realized what was causing it.. where i was asking why it did that to me? Hahaha
Back on topic... because of that experience when i was told vaseline prevented them from cooling-- i never questioned it!! Haha
Thank you for your quick reply!

I've never heard that before but anyway, Chickens don't sweat, Vaseline won't overheat them, especially in a thin layer for mites

If you're worried about using Vaseline or oil, you can always treat SLM with Ivermectin.

Thank you! That is what i had suggested to her... for now then in a month when the heat subsides to do the vaseline or oil at that time. But i was glad to know it doesnt cause problems in the heat... always good to ask when you dont know! Thank you! By the way.. our goldie is getting better and better... she will go out with everyone all day.. but when everyone heads in she wont go... she runs down where we made her a place when we moved her out of the hospital.haha. she goes in her own place! Haha she seems to love being back with rooster!! She follows him around obediently! Haha. In the day when the hens come back to the nest boxes... NO NOT GOLDIE! She thinks she is better than sharing a nest... she always goes to her cage and uses her nest!! SPOILED?? haha
