Hi there,

I hope you can help!

Our beloved hen has been making gurgling sounds for the last 2 days. Her left eye was swollen and shut but it’s open today. She just stays in one place and rarely moves. She also doesn’t eat or drink. I’m not sure what could have caused this as their home environment is the same, same foods. We have bought some new chickens however they are kept separately to them for the time being.

please can you advise?

thank you!

Does she have any bubbles or foam in her eye today or when it was swollen shut? Do you hear any sneeze or cough? It sounds like she might have symptoms of a respiratory disease. MG (mycoplasma gallisepticum) and coryza are ones that can cause eye swelling. Tylosin antibiotic powder in the water cantreat symptoms.

How old are the new chickens? Respiratory diseases are easily brought in by other chickens who may be carriers, but who are not showing symptoms. They can be spread through the air, on shoes, clothes, hands, and equipment.

Thank you for your reply!

She didn’t have any bubbles or foam around the eye it was just shut and looked swollen. It’s open now and has been for some time. No sneezing or coughing but she keeps gurgling and at one point did make a noise as if she was trying to spit something up but nothing came out. One thing I noticed today is her poop was yellowish if that helps?

I’m not sure of the exact age of the new chickens but they seem to be around 2-3 years old.

Can you feel of her crop to see if it is full and puffy or hard, dough? Crop contents can come back up into the throat sometimes during a crop disorder. The crop should fill up during the day, and empty overnight, so checking it at daylight is best. Poop pictures are welcome.

Hi if I’m correct it’s below the beak right? She is puffed up but if I’ve got the right area it’s quite hard. She did move around a little more yesterday looking for food. We’ve been hand feeding her as she doesn’t seem to eat herself.
