Sick chicken or normal

Hiya

I have looked for mites but haven't seen any.

I will get a close up pic of her beak and eye tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

I looked and looked for mites on our sick hen, she is half bald from molting so you would think I would see them... She has been "squat walking" for 6 days and has been living in my kid's shower for 5 days without any change. If we hadn't run out of newspaper and used white paper towels we might never have noticed them at all. My son (and his young eyes) was the one who actually noticed them They were almost microscopically small but there were 1000's of them. I treated her with Sevin dust (something that should NOT be done indoors!) and she is much more active and peppy already. I think she is on the mend.

Your hen is probably molting but sometimes other problem come along with the stress of molting

Here some piccies of her face. Been unable to look in her mouth as yet but she is eating fine.

I am worried about the white bits on her eyelid hopefully you can see in the picture.

Having taking a good look at her backside where her tail feathers should be it looks like they have been snapped off, is this normally how molting looks?

I will be getting her some Tuna fish tomorrow and some cat food as I have read these are high in protein which is what she needs.

I can't see the white bits on the eyelid--can you pick them off at all? During molting you can see flakes and little tubular things from the skin and feathers. Fungus can affect the comb causing white, gray or yellow crusts, but putting an antifungal cream like miconazole or tolfanate would be dangerous to get into the eye. Just clean with some saline, and use some neoporin on it. The lesion on the the beak looks to me like an injury from rubbing on something sharp such as a feeder, waterer, or fencing. If it gets larger, I would put antibiotic or antifungal cream on it. She looks like she is a sweetie--I love having a few banties in my flock.

Ok it's getting really bad now. Almost doubled in size. Will get an updated picture later.

Should I just pick it off or is that a bad idea!

The scab on her beak? I would leave it because it will bleed. How is the white material on the eyelid. Did you treat for fungus or mites?

ok I sent a picture to a specialist Avian Vet. It's not good news as he thinks its squamous cell carcinoma and it would be kindest to have her put to sleep.

My partner is taking her to get it confirmed tomorrow.
