Yesterday I noticed that my Barred Rock is not acting right. She is 13 months old. She was standing off by herself when the rest were free ranging. She also had her feathers fluffed up so she looked bigger than normal. I picked her up and noticed that when she opened her mouth it was really wet inside (looked like clear mucus). She is standing very still most of the time, when she walks it is very slowly. She has not eaten today, or had anything to drink.

I dont think she is going to make it. I'm worried about the rest of the flock. We are separating her today. Do you know what this might be? We have calls into several vets with no luck yet. TIA

1) What type of bird , age and weight. Barred Rock, 13 months old, normal weight.

2) What is the behavior, exactly. Stand-offish from the group. Standing very still and closing her eyes often. Not eating today or drinking. Inside mouth is very wet (like clear mucus)

3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. None

4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I don't know of anything.

5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. They normally eat layer pellets with grit and fresh water. She has not eaten today, maybe not yesterday...hasnt drank anything this morning

6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal

7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? I put Sulmet in the water this morning just in case.

8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I will treat myself, or take to a vet if I can find a chicken vet in our area.

9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. She looks normal.

10) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Pine shavings in coop, dirt run.

Good idea to seperate her and let her rest. They sell electrolyte and vitamin packets that you can add to her water. Lots of TLC. Good luck.

Does her crop seem of reasonable size? Is there any chance that she had access to greens that might not have agreed with her - bitter, etc. or some sort of contamination in the coop - detergent from cleaning etc. that might have remained.

Good idea to isolate....easier to monitor intake and behavior.

Has she been laying? And recently stopped? Maybe an egg is impacted. If so, search on warm soaks and darkness to inhibit egg production.
