Have 2 Light Sussex (live in Sussex in England!). Both 4 years old. Good layers until November then stopped cos winter. Maisie has now started laying again, 2 or 3 eggs a week but all very soft shelled (and the hens eat them!). Other hen (Daisy) became ill 2 months ago, coughing and very slow-moving; not coughing now but spends much of the day standing about hunched up, tail down. Not laying. Both eating well. Both wormed 5 months ago (so due next month); coop cleaned every day, fresh water every day. Have searched all forums and online advice. Spoke to breeder and she didn't know. Anyone got any ideas why Maisie not laying hard-shelled eggs and what's wrong with Daisy?

No but there is a lot of shell stuff in their food. I’ve kept chickens for 7 years and never used oyster shell, always had same food and never had soft shell before.
