We have a 6-year-old chicken that we don't know exactly what is wrong. I have looked up diseases but can't pin it down.
The biggest symptom is a very thick white substance in her beak.
Her eyes are clear and her nostrils appear OK.
She is holding her head down and has her feathers fluffed up. But she is moving around. She came out of the coop this morning but we have her isolated in a cage now. She is still moving around in the cage.
I did notice her outside yesterday not acting quite normal but I thought she was pecking at something on the ground. The chickens are free range.
I haven't seen her poop, but there is nothing in the coop to indicate anything wrong.
The other chickens all appear fine.
This chicken wanders farther than any of the other chickens. She is a leghorn and will fly into our fenced in yard. We did have several month-old kittens die in the fenced-in yard several days ago after days of rain (they got wet) and a virus that caused their eyes to get plugged with mucus. She has been known to eat out of the cat dish.
WE have compost made from garden debris, horse, rabbit and chicken manure and she also has been known to peck in there.
Please help me figure this out if you can.
She is a quirky little pet, so we hate to put her down if we don't have to, but we don't want to lose the whole flock.
Thanks, Linda
