Hello, I’m Kathy V. I have a chicken that’s 6 months old and is sick. Hasn’t layed eggs yet and I checked for being egg bound but that’s not the issue here. This is day three that she hasn’t been feeling well. I have been keeping her in the house. I feel like it’s a virus and not a bacterial infection. I hear wheezing in her throat. She’s not coughing or sneezing and has no runny nose she just keeps her eyes closed and just stands or sits with your head down. When I do give her medication, she’s doing some mouth breathing for a while after giving her that, but then settles down. i’ve been giving her Tylan 50 orally twice a day, which I have given my other chickens when they have a respiratory issue and it always clears up. She is not clearing up. She is not eating or drinking. I have been giving her egg yolk and water and regular vitamin water, and Nutra drench. The vitamin I’ve been giving her is Vet Rx. I’ve taken her outdoors a few times to see if she’ll walk around. She seems really depressed that she’s in a different environment but she will not even peck anything off the ground. She puts her beak to the ground but never picks anything up. This is day three and I’m not sure what I could be missing as could be her problem. When I pick her up, she opens her eyes if I’m walking around with her or if I pet her she’ll open them for a while but then goes back to keeping them close. Her comb and waddle are nice and red and I just don’t see any other issues going on except some sort of a virus. I am keeping her hydrated every couple of hours.

Welcome to BYC!!

Has long has she been in the house? I prefer to keep my sick chickens inside the coop with others, unless they are being picked on. Then I will separate them inside a pen with food and water, but where they can still see the others.

What do her poops look like? Has she ever laid eggs yet? Cannyou feel of her crop and tell us if it is empty and flat, full, hard, doughy, or puffy? Is her tail down or up? Does she seem hunched or puffed up? Pictures may be helpful.

Since you have seen respiratory issues before, there may be a respiratory disease in the flock that she has been exposed to. What were the worst symptoms you have ever seen in others? I would keep up with the vitamins and electrolytes, and trying to get some moistened chicken feed and egg into her. Check to see if her crop is emptying overnight. Note if there is any enlargement in her lower belly between her legs, or if she has lost weight. Look her over for any lice or mites moving on her skin.

I’m not 100% sure where the crop is located. I’ve read some articles and seen some pictures but I don’t feel anything. That’s either softer squishy or hard in the area that’s showing in the pictures. Her poop is mainly just white pasty poop. Haven’t seen any lice or mites. And I have felt her over under her belly and I have actually done an internal in her vent with a lubricated exam glove and felt nothing. I have read so many articles and done so many different checks that I’m just kind of stumped at this moment. I did read on this site that Tylan 50 does not work on something that is a virus only on a bacterial issue. Which it has done for me in the past. I didn’t have another chicken that hung out with her that had a lot of coughing and sneezing last week. I gave it to Tyler and 50 the first day I noticed it and it was basically doing great the following day. And then a week later, the other bird is acting this way, but not getting better. She has been in the house for three days. I will try to put her out in the chicken coop with a couple of other birds that won’t pick on her and see how she does. I will attach some pictures when I get back home. I maybe a video. Thank you!

Here is a picture of a full crop. It should be felt before bedtime when it would be full, and by the next morning it should be flat and not felt. She may be dehydrated since her poop contains a lot of white urates. I would try to get her drinking some water. Also look inside her beak and throat for any white to yellow gunk, or something blocking her airway.

Kathy, how is it going?

Ginger helps chickens very quickly for respiratory. I usually do honey, ginger and alittle water mix and put it into a medicine stopper. I had one chicken that was sick and honking when breathing and doing what your chicken is doing with head down eyes closed mostly. I fixed the respiratory with honey, ginger, turmeric, and garlic and alittle water mix within 8!hrs giving her a medicine stopper of it every hour. She still didn’t put her head up so I gave her dewormer for parasites, she was better the next day I left her rest an extra day and took her back out to the coop and to this day she is fine, that was last spring, she is an olive egger. Seems like in the wet weather respiratory issues happen a lot more.
