Sick chicken

Please help me . I'mm new to chikens, 6weeks, I have aquired 2, 5-6 year old hens. I just love them. A few days ago I noticed that one has messy butt. This am when I let them out there was a large spot under her perch, bright red and not mixed with poo. She came out and was eating and doing her usual routine. There also seem to be lice ? around her vent. They are not easy to catch so I will have to check her tonite when she roosts.

Could be a vent prolapse...is anything hanging out that you can see?

Nothing that I could see. Lokks normal. I've been reading about powders to dust with, can you tell me what they are and why, and how and when to use. Thank you for your response.

LYNLY, I am sorry, but I do not know that much about the dusting powders-only used DE once. I know many of the other members on this forum know about them though. Only reason I asked about a possible prolapse is because I had to deal with one last summer with similar symptoms. Maybe another member can help? Anyone?

For bugs you can use repeat treatments on all birds with DE, seven dust, or another poultry dust. The key is to keep treating till they are all gone. Will take a month or so at least. As for the bright red goo... can't help you there, sorry.

I've been treating chicken for 4 days with betadine, H2O2, and blue kote. Poor thing is very colorful. maggots seem to be about gone. Found out she was attacked by a hawk about 3 weeks before I got her. After cutting feathers and flushind I could see where the skin was torn and infested. I used a 20 volume H2O2 that hair dressers use, I am one, this stuff just boils those little nasties out. She seems to want to stay in her coop with food and h2o. I think I will just leave her be and treat 2 times a day. Any advice would be appriciated. thank you.

Nice of the folks you got her from to tell you, hmmm?
I'd keep on with the bluekote and stop the Betadine and the Hydrogen Peroxide...the peroxide is good for flushing the wounds when they're new, but it can also hurt the new flesh coming in.
Were or are they on medicated feed?
Bright red may be cocci.
A prolapse is caused when the hens oviduct turns inside out when she lays and it gets stuck that way.
My little bantam had a Chef Boyardee coloured poop and I think that she might've gotten into some Nightshade berries that I missed...

I would personally bring her inside because an open wound outside can attract new flies and new eggs to the wound. Good luck!

Thank you for writing back. Last night with I was treating her I realized how light she felt, I have not seen her eat, now that I look back. What kind of RX feed do I buy?? If she is still with us tonite I will just do blue kore Thank you

Most chick food is medicated. Because she's so light, you may be better off buying a chick starter...Purina Layena and Blue Seal make chick food.
