Hi! I'm new and I've been reading up a lot on everyone's post, it's great! I have an issue tho...my 2 1/2 year old Barred Plymouth Rock is not doing so well. I have not been able to find anything...I need help! She cannot keep her head up, has a mark on the top of her neck and now her chest skin is black!! Anyone ever see this?! What is it?!

Welcome to BYC, sorry this has to be a way to say hi.

Have you checked under her feathers looking for any type of injury? Are the colors you are seeing are they deep bruising? Any feather loss around the area? Is she able to eat and drink on her own? How is she acting, walking around normal chicken stuff. Or is she ruffling her feathers sitting not moving, tail down droopping her wings? What color is her poop? Is her crop full, empty, mushy or hard?

Does she have access to a compost pile? Can she have gotten into any old carcass or meat? Or old vegetation?

You need 10 posts to be able to post pictures, if possible make some other comments and post some pictures so others can see what you are dealing with it would help so much more. I personally have seen that before but was bruising from an attack it may not be the same as what you are dealing with.

I would clean that up mild soap and water, or betadine diluted, or diluted peroxide. Trim some feathers away from it. Put some antibiotic cream on it without any "caine" painkiller in it. To me it looks like some type of injury. The dark area looks like dried scabbed blood, the yellowish fatty tissue . Looks like it is partially healed. How is her poo? Her eyes clear does she fluff up and try to sleep a lot?

If you could take a whole bird picture to see where on body it is and how she is standing it would be helpful too. Would get her some vitamins to help her, electrolytes if stressed. May even think of tube feeding her to get food into her besides water if not on her own.
