Hello all! I haven't been on here in awhile, but I just wanted to share with anyone who could use this info, if you didn't know already.
Watermelon, in my experience anyway, has been a lifesaver when you have a chicken who just isn't doing right, and who may have stopped eating. It seems to me like chickens will eat watermelon even when they won't eat anything else.
Recently I thought I was going to lose one of my hens. Lethargic, not going into the coop at night, not showing any appetite.... and I had totally forgotten how useful watermelon was to me years ago, with another hen I had.
So on day 2 or 3 of this, my neighbor just happened to give the flock some extra watermelon she had.
Well my hen went for it!! And now she's back on her feet and acting normally.
Now I'm NOT saying that watermelon is some kind of miracle cure for disease or anything. Just that, if you are struggling with a chicken who won't eat, I think watermelon is a good thing to try. It seems like it has that perfect combo of hydration, and enough sugar, to perk up a weary chicken.
And then once they eat the watermelon, sometimes they will go for something else to eat, too.
