Sick Chickens - Need to Catch - HOW????

I meant a right flashlight when I go to the coop. Sorry for the confussion. I know what I mean just not how to write it. LOL

My coop does not have electricity to it so I will be using a flashlight. My husband is an astronomer so he uses red flashlights when he is outside so I was wondering if that would help in not stirring the chickens up too much when I am trying to get them in the coop at night when they are roosting.

To catch them at night on a roost you don't use any light: that is the whole point.

Chickens can't see well at night. You go under the roost and grab them by the legs. If you do need some light then take a flashlight and cut it on and off fast: then grab.

It's an art catching chickens, isn't it? I can catch mine very easily, and they aren't all tame. Food is the easiest way for me to get them.

I use a regular flashlight when I go to the coop, it does stir them up, I mean to shine it in their eyes for amoment to dull their night vision, just like you, for a few moments, they won't see as well and you can use that to grab em, you might want to get some help, some one to hold the light cause it's hard to catch a chicken with one hand, without alot of flapping, lot easier with 2 hands.
If you don't want to 'blind' em, use a red light..

Ditto. I use a long-handled fishnet too if I need to catch my birds. Some I can pick up and some I can't. They aren't to difficult to catch but I have a pretty large net. Treats help.

During the day a long leg hook.

I build all my coops with a window or door next to the roost. My birds aren't tame and that's the only place I can be sure to grab them.
I don't chase chickens.

I like this idea. I will have to include it in the next time I build a coop.
I have been reaching in at night and have been able to snag the chicken I need to treat. I have also been able to put all the chickens up on the roosts. They are still learning about that and each night more of them are up there on the own.

Maybe now I can open up the nesting boxes and get them ready for laying since they are 17 weeks old now. They were sleeping in them so I closed them off.

Thanks for all your help

Either get them on the roost or go near them and make it verry plain that you have treats then just sit down and hand feed treats. Bannas work well just hold it down where they can bite it. after they really start chowing down just put the treat down and pick up an chicken.
