Hello, we are new to Backyard Chickens and just recently got 8 chicks (approx 1 week old) three days ago from a local feed supply store. We got 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Buff Orphingtons, 2 Jersey Giants and 2 Gold Sex-Links. All are pullets. We got the chicks on Friday April 13.
Below are the anwers to the questions at the top of the forum:
1) What type of bird , age and weight: All of the chicks are about the same age, about a week and size wise, they seem similar.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. This morning, one of the buff orphingtons was lethargic and could not stand. My wife noticed that she had labored breathing and pulled her out and gave her some water with a spoon and tried to feed her an egg yolk. Sadly, shortly thereafter, the chick began convulsing and died. Now, one of the Jersey Giants is showing the same labored breathing as the Orphington and is lethargic as well.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? Just started today.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? One of our Jersey Giants
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No signs of trauma
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Nothing I am aware of.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. The birds have all been eating medicated Nurtrina Feed and Water with a Vitamin Supplement.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Both of these birds stools seem runny, but no blood.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Being new to raising chickens, I do not know what sort of treatment to administer other then trying to get the sick ones to drink and eat.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I would like to treat it myself if I can, I have read about some people having luck with certain antibiotics.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use We are using a cardboard box for a brooder with Pine shavings for litter. Also, for heat we are using a 250w Red Heat Lamp (We live in Alaska).
Any help or recommendation as to what may be causing this condition or how to possibly treat it would be much appreciated.
