sick chicks

Quote: there is a cheap generic one sold in my neck of the woods that has a rougher, bumpy, surface that I like to use. Got a 1/2 dozen new Aussie babies coming next week myself

Temp under the heat lamp is 92 and they have plenty of cool space. The store told me to make the electrolyte solution to be the color of yellow gatoraide. I think that may be too strong. They are eating medicated chick feed.

Two of the four chicks died today. Heartbroken. The third is declining fast. She is not moving much. The fourth is perky, we removed her and put her in a different pen.

It seems like something contaminated them. Or one got sick and the rest got it? Everyone I talk to is baffled.

With your new chicks I would nix the electrolytes unless they seem slow or stressed from shipping and just give plain water. Or use the Save-a-Chick packets, easy to mix up the correct dose. You just don't want to over do a good thing, chicks are so small they don't need much. I'm not saying that was the issue with your chicks, just a suggestion.

First time chicken mom... One of my 8 chicks from TSC didnt make it through the night or the first 12 hours. When we got him home he had a large, crusted scab about two-three inches on his lower back-upper behind. I though it may just be congealed poop but it looked painful and solid on there. I stayed up until 12:30 am and they were fine, all sleeping in a ball... and my husband checked them at 6:30 am and little edith had died. This happened to be the chick our four year old selected. What was that scab? Is there anything else that could have gone wrong or was it sick? Is there anything I should have known or done differently? I dont want the others to get sick. I feel terrible. We are less than 16 hours in...

My dad (who lives in an urban area of Pakistan) was sold 11 Golden Buff Heavy Cochins 4 weeks ago. All failed to thrive, they were otherwise very active but he keeps on losing 1 every 4 days. Down to 5 now. The 4 week old chicks are hardly growing any feathers and look smaller than my 2 week old Legbar chicks. All but one look like they are going to die. I think it must be some sort of genetic deficiency. My dad's came from a breeder, who has been inbreeding for a few years now so that could be one reason or maybe my dad who has always had a broody raise the chicks doesn't know how to raise them and these chicks are just malnourished. He has been giving them chick starter feed but also throwing them chicken scraps including but not limited to Spinach, onions, raddish leaves and the raddish itself, potato skins, etc. I have been giving him tips regularly but am not sure if he is following them completely. What do you folks think based on the pics only. Here are the pics:

This is the only one that I think may survive!
