I have a 1.5 year old Saxony who just recovered from a niacin deficiency. She has been acting 100% normal until last night when she let herself in the duck house which is odd and this morning she did not come out. Her feathers are ruffled, she wont stand, she has a half closed weepy eye, her vent is swollen, purple and protruding a little and she has some leakage of diarrhea around her vent. She makes a strange squawk noise occasionally, idk if its a cough or a whine from discomfort. Those are all of her symptoms. Any thoughts??

Sounds like she's egg-bound!

Give her a warm bath, as well as calcium. There's a liquid one by Durvet you can get at Tractor Supply, or use disolved calcium citrate tablets. Dribble either one in her mouth carefully so she doesn't aspirate it.

This is what I thought as well so I did a warm bath and 250mg calcium tab dissolved in water. Waited a couple hours, no egg, so I gloved up with lube and felt in her vent and I felt a small hard ball?! Not an egg though. I removed as much as I could and it was a white glob that crumbled into a sandy powder when I squeezed it between my fingers. Idk what the hecks going on. Unfortunately I made her vent prolapse a little from having my finger in there so I applied a steroid cream and put her in a kennel in the garage for the night. Any thoughts or advice for me??

Is she feeling better without that obstruction? It almost sounds like solidified urate (the white part of their poop). Were you able to push the protruding vent back in?

I would certainly continue with warm baths for now, perhaps with some epsom salts to help with the swelling but don't let her drink the water as it will dehydrate her.

Is she eating at all?

She does not act like she feels better. She's barely moving, breathing shallow, no stool passed all night in her crate. I pushed the prolapse back in twice and it popped straight back out. She is clearly in a lot of pain when I touch near her vent. She ate well yesterday despite not leaving the duck house and acting sick, I did not leave food in the crate last night and havent fed her yet this morning. I wasnt sure if I should since she isnt passing stool.

sorry you are going through this. sounds like a lot of symptoms so you might like to look at this diagnostic chart
http://www.majesticwaterfowl.org/diagnostic chart.htm

i’m thinking an antibiotic wills be a good idea. do you have any in hand?
I was able to get prolapses to stay in by using first witch hazel and then Manuka honey, and push it back in and hold it hold the vent closed for a couple of minutes. I have had 3 ducks that prolapsed I had to give them extra calcium as well. i use liquid calcium gluconate and give 1 ml by syringe orally

or calcium citrate with d3 pills 1 a day for about a week.
if she’s not eating, she can go down in a matter of days. Have you tried giving her peas or something else she loves see if she eats them
May have to tube Feed if she’s not eating anything
and finally Is there any option to take her to a vet?

🫂 Sorry to hear this. I understand what you mean though, sometimes it can be downright impossible to do anything.

Will you do an autopsy to see if you can find anything? I would be interested in the results for the knowledge should anything similar happen here.
