Sick Duck?

Yes, we did look all over her chest both above and below the pouch but never found an injury. The pouch was going down and she seemed to be getting better. It was down about half way and the next day I went out to change out her water and she had passed. So far none of the other ducks are having any issues. So, I am hoping that it was just a birth defect or something non contagious. I always hate loosing one of my birds, but my friend always remind me that "When you deal with Livestock, you will also have to deal with Dead stock" Sick humor, but true. I enjoyed her greatly while she was with me and I am grateful to have had her.

Hi Rural Mama,
It sounds like your duck died of ascites, or "water belly." There are forums on BYC that discuss it, and you'll see info if you Google the topic.
I wish I'd seen your post but for some reason it didn't come up when I checked the forum. Although most websites say ascites is incurable and eventually could lead to the duck's death of heart failure, you can fend it off by keeping the duck away from stress and overexertion, and by giving the duck some supplements to improve heart and liver function (such as coenzyme Q10 for heart, and alpha lipoic acid and milk thistle extract for liver detox and support).
CoQ10 softgels are better than the powder because the CoQ10 is more bioavailable when dissolved in certain types of fat. Also avoid giving the duck too much of any foods that can put a load on the liver, such as too many mealworms/fatty foods/high protein foods.

I am so sorry to hear about her passing.

and also sorry I didn't think of water belly I have lost 2 hens to it. But when you said she was only 3 months old water belly wasn't something I would have thought of. Still not sure that would have been the cause. at 3months old.

I'm glad I came across your post. I have a duck at our lake whom I'm trying to get rescued whom I think might have the same thing. I think she's also young, perhaps 4 or 5 months old. I don't think she'll make it. I think she's been going downhill since she was dumped at this lake and has a big line in the middle of the chest like your did.
