Hello! I have a sick Ancona hen. She is about 2.5 years old. Her comb is pale. I don’t see any visible signed of injury, she is not coughing, sneezing or showing any outward signs of infection. I noticed her pale comb two days ago. I dewormed her with Valbazen last night and she has been hiding under a bush most of the day today and appears to be worse then she was last night. I also have her outlet cell and B vitamins, both rooster booster brand supplements.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be?

I did lose another hen about a week ago. She lost the ability to walk over about a two week period. It started as a limp and then progressed to her just laying in the quarantine pen. Her comb was also very pale. She didn’t have any outward signs of injury or parasites. She was also dewormed but it did not improve her condition. I also loaded her up with calcium, vitamin B, poultry cell, kicken chicken….

I have a flock of 10 hens and two roosters. Half the flock is 2.5 years old and the others were obtained this spring. All of the other birds appear healthy and are not showing any sign of sickness.

Maybe I am dealing with Mareks and they aren’t having common symptoms?

The chickens free range almost every day. Their coop is cleaned often. Ventilation in the coop is sufficient.

Any ideas or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for your loss. Have you added any new birds in the last couple of months? Could she be starting to molt? I would offer some scrambled egg and wet mushy chicken feed, and try tuna or canned cat food to tempt eating. Offer some water with electrolytes a tsp of sugar to give her a boost. Is she having any trouble walking?

Thank you for the responses! I did add new birds in the spring from several different places. They were chicks and raised in the brooder inside, so they were separated for at least 8 weeks. None of the new birds are showing any signs of illness.

I did see her eat a little today but she has mostly been sitting under a bush. She is one of my more active foragers and first to come out for treats. She’s also and active layer and last laid about a week ago.

I’ll get her some egg and more electrolytes tonight to see if that helps.

I guess I’m just stumped on what could be her illness and if this going to speed through my flock. I’m worried and concerned.

Oh when she got up to eat earlier she pooped and I hook a picture. I chopped it up a little to see if there was any worms but I’m not seeing anytbing. Thanks again for all the help and any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated!
