Hi everyone! My leg horn hen was fine yesterday morning. By the after noon she was not as active as usual and her bun is pretty dirty. She is still not very active this morning and doesn't want to eat. She didn't lay an egg yesterday. I let her out but after 30 min she headed back in into the garage were I'm keeping her in a box for now. She is three years old. Her tail is up and her comb is bright red still.

Her poop started to look like this.

Thank you so much in advanced.

Any prolapsed tissue?
Did you feel for an egg?
Do you have any antibiotics on hand?

Just trying to rule out a couple of causes for blood in the stool - a broken egg inside of her, vent prolapse or vent picking (do you see any injuries at the vent)?

Vet care is always best if you possible.

I will give you my 2¢, hopefully others like @Eggcessive and @casportpony will chime in with theirs.
I would treat for Coccidiosis and Enteritis IF there is no obvious cause for the blood (as mentioned above).

You don't mention if you have any medication on hand and I don't know your location, so...
Get some Corid and Tylan50 at Tractor Supply.

Dosage for Corid is 1 1/2 teaspoons Corid powder or 2 teaspoons of 9.6% Corid liquid per gallon of water. Give for 5-7 days - make sure this is the ONLY water available during that time period. Mix a fresh batch at least once a day.

Injectable Tylan50 given orally at .25ml per pound of weight 3 times a day for 5 days.

Encourage her to drink well.

Keep us posted.

X2 on treating for both coccidiosis with Corid, and necrotizing enteritis with an antibiotic. A vet and a fecal float would be best, but enteritis can be treated with a number of common antibiotics. Many things can cause bleeding.

Thank you so much for all the information. No prolapse tissue.

I do have amoxicillin. Also I have not felt for an egg. I will do that now.

They don't have the Tylan at the tractor store near me in norco,.ca.

Can I use the amoxicillin instead. They are tablets I would need to crush up. But how would I be able to feed it to her of she doesn't want to eat?

Thank you so, so much

Amoxicillin dosage is 57 mg per pound given twice a day, according to some vets. So 250 mg twice a day would probably be a good dosage. You can the tablet or capsule orally or in some cooked egg. But remember to also treat with Corid in the water. The liquid Corid is sometimes less expensive, and you can give a couple of drops of the undiluted Corid orally twice a day in addition to the Corid water. Have you checked for eggbound yet?

Hi!
Just wanted to say thank you again!

My hen is back to normal doing everything you advice me to do.
Sorry didn't keep you posted sooner. I had surgery and in recovery. Now I'm back home and a nother chicken is sick but I'm about 99% sure she is egg bound :(

Glad your hen and you have recovered. Have you checked your chicken for egg binding by inserting a finger 1-2 inches inside her vent?
Thank you!
I was finally able to get to her. I will be checking in just a few. I need help because of my surgery. But this hen actually stop laying eggs about a year ago. She is about 6 years old. I thought it was old age. I will check and will let me know soon.
