Hi, one of my bantams has been very off for a while. My broody hen just died and she looked very similar to this one.
She seems to be getting worse.
Lethargic, hiding in the corner, getting bullied by the others, ruffled feathers, quiet, barely eating at all, just some small nitpicks here and there, but her crop is practically empty all day. This has been opgoing on for a while, she just stays puffed up or sits in the corner sleeping. Her poop is very runny. Vet RX didn’t help nor did Nutri drench, what should i do?

Have you tried separating her from the others, and trying to get fluids and electrolytes into her. Once she drinks, offer some scrambled egg bits, chicken feed mixed with a lot of water into a mash, and try to get her eating. What color are her droppings? Pictures are helpful. Did you give up to 1 ml of the NutriDrench orally? Has she been laying eggs? Is there any enlargement of her lower belly between her legs? Could she have been kept from food and water due to the bullying?

Thank you for your response. Yes, she’s been sleeping indoors for about three days now.

I’m sorry for the bad photo quality, but all the droppings are extremely liquid with some green and white substance. I didn’t quite give her 1 ml, i will try that amount. She has not been laying eggs. No enlargement of belly between legs. No, she is separated now and refuses to eat, with the other chickens she pretends to, scratches around with them but never eats. She is very skinny, like no meat whatsoever. Just bone and skin. I’m not sure what else to do, i’m worried she will pass today or soon due to not eating or drinking enough.

How old is she? Sorry that she is refusing to eat and drink. Has her crop remained empty? You could try tube feeding, but she may have something wrong that is making her feel not appetite. Cancer comes to mind. When I lose a chicken, I usually do a home necropsy to look for signs of what was wrong. Your state vet can do a thorough one as well. Here is a list of state vets to contact:

She is about a year old now. Yes, her crop has remained little to no food, at the moment its fully empty. She has tried multiple times to eat some straw like bedding, i’m not sure why. Here is a photo of her poop right now.

I’m wondering if it would be bacteria or anything? A hawk attacked her a while ago, she got sutured and the wound under her wing healed fast and seemed fine, but it seemed coincidently right after the attack she seemed off and has been slowly declining since.
Thank you for your help.

Hard to know without a vet or labs. Is the white part of her poop yellowish? Hard to tell in the light. She may have suffered internal injuries from the attack, but hard to know. Some young chickens can suffer from reproductive disorders. Most of the time, you would just give supportive care. If she won’t eat or drink, then tube feeding would be the best bet. I like to tempt them to eat with scrambled egg, wet chicken feed, or tuna. But she really needs fluids most of all.

It’s more white colored then yellow, i saw some soft shelled eggs laid from the rod before all this happened but I’m not sure if it was her or her friend who sleeps next to her Gabby.

While i was writing this, Jolene was drinking lots of fluids, and eating the little diamond shaped thing inside of corn. I’m not sure if you know what I mean but its at the base of each corn piece and is the size of a sesame seed. She ate about 20 of them and drank some rooster booster water. I take anything as a win, maybe it will stimulate her appetite.

I’m very happy. Within the past hour she has had over 55 normal bites of mash (like a normal chicken would!) and about 20 sips of water. She seems more active too. She was biting my finger and is less pale. Walking around a bit more too. This is such a improvement from ghostly pale, not moving and two baby nibbles of feed throughout the entire day.

I hope things continue to improve for her.

@Eggcessive looking in her poop i found worms. I do have a video i can upload if that helps. Just treat with safeguard dewormer? I know it doesn’t work for all worms but most..

I didn’t see any before but I definitely did now. I have two week old baby chicks that she has been in the brooder for and probably pooped in. Can i give them safeguard too? I fill a corn piece with safeguard and give it to them as disguised. Can i do the same thing for the babies or should it be smaller?

Can you upload a picture of the worms? Are they moving, and what size are they? SafeGuard dosage is 0.25 ml (1/4ml) per pound of weight given orally for 5 consecutive days, which treats all worms except for tapeworms. I would not worm baby chicks, but wait until they are at least 6 weeks old.
