Sick hen or what advice

welcome-byc.gif

Sorry to hear your girl isn't acting herself. Try posting over on the ER forum with all the details (a photo might help too), hopefully someone over there can help you out. In the meantime, it's good you separated her...see if you can get her to eat some scrambled egg and drink some water with electrolytes in it. She needs to stay hydrated and take in some nourishment.

Best of luck to you and your girl.

Go to forum and click. Look at" raising backyard chickens" and you will see Emergency/Disease. Click there and start your thread.
Also, at the top of that section type in sick hen and other situations of sick hens will appear. I find reading that site is very educational and helps a lot. Describe your chicken: etc. droopy tail.....not eating or drinking...vent area. also list any meds you may have. Also, when you get a chance type in first aid kits for chickens. Many wonderful folks list the kinds of meds and supplies they have gathered over time....so much to learn. Good supply sites for meds are Jeffers and Hakes . Go online to check them out. I am sure there are many others as well. Every once in a while I add to my "first aid kit". It makes ME feel better....and sometimes my chickens too(lol). Order time from the sites is usually a few days. Please let us know how things go....best of luck.

Do you think that maybe she could have an egg stuck inside her?
Have you or are you able to feel for one?

Welcome!

You have received some good advice and I definitely recommend the link N F C has given you to the Emergencies Forum. However, my first impression with the few symptoms we have to go on would be egg binding or possibly a soft shelled egg that she is having trouble laying.

Also, crop issues [sour or impacted] can cause similar symptoms.

I do hope that you are able to find out what ails her and that she makes a full recovery.

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
