Can anyone PLEASE tell me what’s wrong with my hen? We’ve not had our chickens but a shirt while & we’ve not separated them to know which are laying & which are not, but the most eggs we’ve gotten in a day from the is 4 & there are 7 hens. She’s been lethargic for 2 days now. Eats & drinks a little, but doesn’t walk around & “bug” for crickets, etc. We put her in a crate yesterday so the roo would leave her alone. I don’t think she’s egg bound because she’s soft in her belly & not fevered, but idk. Her back feathers are a mess every day when I get home from work. I tried to upload a video but it kept give me an error about not having an allowed extension or something, idk. I took a pic of her vent after I cleaned her up a bit in case that might give a hint. We’re new to chickens & I don’t like to see one sick. Thank you in advance for any help. We’re on our way to Tractor Supply to hopefully find her something. Sorry for the bells ringing - my goats wanted my attention on them!!!

Updated - I've attached a pic of her yesterday before I cleaned her up hoping that maybe her poop will tell somebody something that will help!! I wish I could get my video to upload, but everything I try doesn't work! We also checked to see if she is egg bound, but we can't feel an egg, but she does feel a little fevered up in her vent, but I'm not sure really what a chicken's temp is supposed to be either! We went ahead & gave her some sugar water with Tums & are going to give her some scrambled eggs this morning. Thanks for any help!!

we had a similar problem with one of our hens. we took her to the vet's and everything looked fine, her crop was good but her gizzard was a little hard so we were advised to give her 5 ml of pineapple juice with syringe, this should breakdown whatever is blocking the gizzard, by the second day she started acting better, and day 3 I was checking her out to see if there was still an issue and she laid an egg without a shell or membrane while I was holding her but then she seemed to be back to normal and has been fine ever since. Not sure what she might have eaten but we started limiting the treats and I cut up anything that has stems to ensure there is nothing that can block her again. they have all been happy ever since, back to 4 eggs a day from our 4 hens.

How old is she, and what do her droppings look like? Is her lower belly enlarged, compared to the other hens? Has she lost any weight through her breast bone area? How does her crop feel, empty or full? Since you don’t know for sure if she is laying, she might be suffering from a reproductive disorder, but I also would be concerned that she could have coccidiosis or worms. Do you have a vet locally who could do a fecal float for worms and coccidiosis? If she has a reproductive disorder, she probably is not laying, and may be having diarrhea, no appetite, and they may be lethargic or have problems walking, preferring to sit. I would try to get her eating some chopped egg, some wet chicken feed, and offer plenty of fluids. Electrolytes with vitamins would be good for her.

Hello, I’m not sure how old your hen is and without more detailed information on her, stools etc, I would say for now you have done well to isolate her. When my old hens are lethargic I give them electrolyte drink and I feed them scrambled eggs with meal worms, the extra proteins in mealworms will make up for the little she eats.. I’m in the U.K. so may be a time delay in my replies so apologies for this. Tony

See update in original post with additional pic. Not sure how old she is - we bought them at a livestock auction, & idk if I'm wrong or not, but by the size of her comb, I would think she's over a year anyway. We have been giving her electrolyte water also. Her breast area feels really thin (but I'm one of those that can't ignore pleading eyes when I'm eating either & always tend to let my furbabies "over-indulge" too much), but the other six of her breed also feel thin to me - which I figured they may be smaller since they're not a meat breed. My husband is at home fixing her some scrambled eggs for breakfast right now since I'm at work!! I've looked, but have not seen any worms in her droppings. You can't see it in the pic, but I noticed when I took the pic, it looked like there was whole pieces of her layer pellets in her dropping that was stuck to her feathers - like they didn't get digested. Not sure about the fecal test - I'm going to call our vets office as soon as they open to ask. Thank you for your reply & advice - it is much appreciated!
