I have a hen who a 2 year old shaver who has been free ranging, I have had her since she was a chick. She was cornered two weeks ago by a friends young labrador pup who pulled out a few feathers but did not seem to have done any damage. She was off colour for the next week, tail down and I thought we may loose her. She was eating but did not pick up. I suspected she may have been egg bound, maybe the pup had broken an egg inside her so I brought her home and did the steam and then hot tubbed her, her poos were very watery and I cleaned up her vent. She is very tight in her abdomen. I kept her home for 3 days, bathing her twice a day but she didn't pass any eggs. She was eating and drinking and seemed bright so I took her back up to the other hens. She waddles around like her bottom is heavy and sometimes she sits down when she eats. She was sun bathing and eating grass and bugs so I left her with the other hens but worried about her all night and thought she may have died overnight but when I went up this morning she waddled up with the other hens when they saw me. I have brought her home again and bathed her again. She is not fluffed up like others have said their hens are when they are in pain. Have made up the receipe for sick hens and her poos this morning - 1 normal, 2 watery but not green or bloody. She is still eating, drinking and resting. Bright eyes and cone is small but a good colour, eyes clear. I wormed her and dont know what else I can do. If anytone has any ideas I would really appreciate them.

After the dog attack, even if it did not external injury, a hen could quit laying for several days or weeks. She may have bruising that is still healing. If her bottom looks like its starting to sag low, then I would worry that an egg broke inside, and now there is an infection... I'd keep an eye on her. She may be just still healing. Can you keep her confined and quiet for a few days?
Good luck, and Welcome to BackYard Chickens.

Hi, yes I have her in my lounge in a cat carrier and will keep her here and confined so I can monitor her better. The other hens had started to pick on her.

The person whose dog attacked her has picked her up to take her to the vet. I hope shes ok. The vet still thinks that she will be egg bound from the shock.

Well my poor chicken has gone to chicken heaven. She went to the vet last night who said that he could feel two eggs inside her and her tummy was heavy and distended. He took a needle sample out of her and said that she had puss from a tumour or peritinitis and recommended putting her to sleep. She had such a lovely nature, RIP.

My heart aches for you - you obviously loved her so very much - she is at peace now.... she was lucky to have you as her carer and guardian...
