I say “lots of water” because I noticed she was sick and standing next to the waterer. So I picked her up to inspect her but found nothing. I then heard a whooshing and gurgling sound as I moved her to the coop pen and then her croop emptied a TON of water. She shook her head, spewed more water and then finally came to herself an broke free of me. She then gurgled up more water and hid in a corner. Her comb is flopped over and the ends are purple, the rest is red. She’s fluffed up. I did see her go back to the water again and drink and drink and drink.

Any ideas? She’s 3, a buff Orpington and hasn’t laid in a few weeks.

I wouldn't think she is getting too much water. Why don't you try giving her different water.

I would separate her in a dog crate or pen to observe her. She may have a large puffy crop that may have been accidentally squeezed when you picked her up, making her regurgitate water. She could have choked or aspirated when she vomited. Chickens may drink a large amount of water with a sour or impacted crop.

I would feel of her crop when she gets separated, and tell us if it feels empty and flat, full, hard, doughy, or puffy and soft. The best time to check her crop would be in early morning at daylight before she has eaten or drunk anything. If her crop feel large and puffy, smell her breath for a bad or sour odor. She may have sour crop. If her crop is hard or doughy, she may have impacted crop.

She spent the night in a dog crate and we woke up to a putrid smell in the house coming from her direction. Her crop is still full of water and puffy, but softish. When I grabbed her to check her, I realized she was the source of this unique smell that I cannot describe. It was the “sauerkraut” smell I was looking for, but it’s very strong.

She didn’t poop much if she did. She seems brighter but maybe because she rested well without worry. She wanted back in the crate after I took her out.

Opinions? Thank you so much for those above who reached out. 😊
