Hi there. I'm new to chickens and have a black sex-link hen (around 14 mos?) who's acting sick. I got her about three weeks ago and she's yet to lay. She has seemed otherwise okay, but today when I got home she was sort of limping around the run, favoring her right leg, having a lot of *very* loose and discolored stools, and doing the weird eye squint and neck crane.

I've separated her from my other three hens, who all appear to be just fine (one is also 14 mos and regularly lays, the others are 22 weeks and haven't yet started). She's sometimes sitting, sometimes limp/standing but drinking and eating.

Any backyard diagnosis? Hoping to avoid a trip to the emergency vet.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry your hen is sick. Mountain Peeps has given the link to our Emergency section and someone there should be able to help diagnose her illness. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your sick BSL hen.

X 2 post on the ER thread- in as much detail as possible. If she is the only new one you brought in 3 weeks ago, she may be harboring some disease. A photo of her stance may help others come up with a diagnosis for her. Is there any chance your other hens pecked her in the eyes or attacked her? Flock members can be very unfriendly to a new bird put in with them.
