Here we go again .. another sick chook. My grandaughters wee Pekin ... she went off her food about two days ago ... stopped foraging and retired to the chook house. yesterday she would not come out and could not stand. I have bought her inside (its the middle of winter here).

She is pushing her bum up in the air and twisting her body around. Sometimes lifting up her wings ... (man I hope she is not in pain). Seems like when she tries to stand she ends up leaning forward with her head down and bum up. I have been giving her fluids, vit D and B with a syringe and today she looked a little better and is now drinking on her own. I have today given her some olive oil too but she will not eat. She is pooping (although quite solid looking), normal colour.

She is 7 months old and not laying yet (its winter). No gunk, crop appears normal, no sneezing or indication is a flu like thing. I wonder if she is due to lay and is bound up or something. Her vent is clear and looks normal (as far as I can tell) but is kind of puckering constantly.

any help would be appreciated as this wee girl belongs to my 11 year old granddaughter and she will be devastated ... Thanks in advance

I had two Perkins go a little bit like this a few months ago and I also brought them inside into the warm. I covered the box they were in , allowing a little bit of light to come in and gave them constant water supply. I also started them on little balls of bread dipped in olive oil and they seemed to eat it. Then once I saw them pick up abit and look slightly healthier and more active I started giving them small portions of porridge just water and oat mix, this also became a favourite to them. Within a week or so they were ready to go back out, and touch wood they've been fine ever since.
Hope this helps you a little bit.

Thanks so much for that .. I feel encouraged. She appears no better tonight, no worse though so thats good. I'm keeping her fluids up and I have mixed up some softer food for her too. I continue with the olive oil too.

Cheers :)

Are you sure its a female? The movement you describe reminds me of the male's "mating dance." Either way, hopefully it regains its appetite.

Feeling so very frustrated and upset. I don't know how to help her. She is much worse now. How the heck am I supposed to help her when I don't even know what is wrong with her. Gutted! I've searched everywhere.

Thanks to you for replying. Was hoping someone more experienced might know what was wrong with her but no one answered. Bit late now ... I cant see her recovering now. She is too far gone and I still have no idea how to treat her. I at least tried ... Gutted

I can't believe this wee girl is still alive. But she is getting weaker and weaker .. she is basically wasting away and there is nothing I can do. She is still shaking and she smells. Pitiful to watch :(
