Sick Pullet

I have a pullet about 6 months old that is sick today. She doesn't want to move. She is standing though and not sitting. She has a very poopy butt. She seems to be breathing heavy. She does not have her feathers ruffled nor does she close her eyes like a sick bird. She seems alert.

I have soaked her in epsom salt. I have tried to get her to drink, electrolytes and vitamin fortified water. I don't think she has started laying. They free range but to the best of my knowledge she is not laying and her comb is not very red.

Any ideas? Does it sound like vent gleet? I am new to chickens and learning everything the hard way by going thru it. Would appreciate any help or advice.

I would put on a rubber glove, and check inside her vent an inch or so for a stuck egg. Try some probiotics in her water, and trim any extra feathers around the vent to keep the poop from accumulating there. She might benefit from worming.

I have given her soaks in warm water and epsom salt. She is alert but doesn't want to walk. She stands very still and doesn't move. She keeps her tail held high. She has yellow diarrhea. She gobbled down food but won't walk to get it. I have given her electrolytes and probiotic, some calcium. I have never checked a chicken for egg binding but I tried. I don't feel anything. She is not worse and she is not better..... she is the same as yesterday.

Could you post a picture of her droppings? It could be possible that she has some sort of reproductive disorder such as internal laying. If any of the droppings look like cooked or broken eggs, that sometimes is a symptom. It doesn't like she is egg bound if you checked inside the vent and didn't feel anything. Vent gleet usually causes a red bare vent area with white patches, and the droppings sort of constantly run a little at a time. It can be from a fungal infection or bacterial infection in the digestive tract. Here is some info about it:

Thank you.... I have been searching all day on the internet. I cleaned the poop off the porch and right now she is in a crate with hay but the poop is basically yellow water...... nothing in it. The poop I cleaned off yesterday looked like broken eggs. I am going to go read at the sites you sent. Thank you again.

I think I may be concentrating on the wrong end of this pullet. I think she has an impacted crop. Her breath is sour and I am going to sound real stupid here (I am new to chickens) but her neck is all wet and sticky. I can't see anything except nasty feathers. She is drinking water like crazy. I have tried to hold her upside down. I have massaged her crop (that is how I found the wet icky). So next step? Can the crop split or open on its own?

It could be sour crop. That also can cause a yeast infections within the body, and vent gleet can be part of that. If there really is a crop problem, I would recommend that you seek vet treatment if possible. Probiotics, antifungals such as Nystatin, or Monitstat 7 are sometimes used orally to treat it.
