One of my Rhode Island Red who is about 4 years old stopped laying a few weeks ago and started sleeping in the nesting box instead of the roost. Ok, not that serious. About a week later I noticed she has this dark blue/black diarrhea (does not appear to have worms in it). She is now sleeping on the floor at night in the coop and tonight was having difficulty getting into the coop and I had to pick her up and put her in. Her feet look ok and she seems to be walking normally. Her comb is pale and drooping to the side a bit since the start of all of this. I did try treating with Corid but no signs of improvement. She is eating and drinking. Seems to be a bit tired at times when I see her out in the yard she will stay in one spot for a little bit and rest. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

She may have a reproductive disorder or cancer, but crop disorders are also common in hens over 2. How does her crop feel first thing in the morning before she eats or drinks—empty and flat, full, puffy, doughy, or hard? Has she lost weight through her breast area and keel? Is her lower abdomen full or enlarged? Has she laid eggs recently? Is her tail held up or down? Will she eat some wet chicken feed or scrambled egg? Try to get her drinking water or electrolytes.

I will have to assess her crop in the morning. She has been eating and drinking. Doesn’t seem to have lost weight. She hasn’t laid eggs in about two weeks. Tail seems to be normal.

Usually, a hen sleeping in the nest box or on the floor has some symptoms that would lead to knowing what was wrong. Could she be bullied or kept from food, water, or the roosts by others? Is there a rooster in the flock?
