Hi everyone, thanks for taking time to read.

We have a 5 month old Rhode Island red that is very lethargic.

Yesterday, we noticed he was isolated inside the coop. He looked puffed up with his chin tucked in. After massaging his chest, we tilted him forward and he vomited out some fluid.

Today, we gave him a bath thinking he may have been backed up but he is not improving. While drying in the towel, I was rubbing him and he was making some little gurgle sounds.

His stool is a very light yellow color. His comb is a medium/ light red and wattle is bright red.

He seems loose his balance sometimes.

He’s been separated from the flock since yesterday. Unsure if he has more fluid that needs to be released.

Any guidance/ information to provide some relief to this little guy, is very appreciated!

I can only figure out how to post pictures so I took some still shots from the videos showing the “squishy” area.

Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry to hear about your cockerel.

He has a squishy area, would that be his crop? The right side of the breast?

I would be careful tilting him and vomiting, he could aspirate, choke and die, chickens do not have a gag reflex.

If he's lethargic, take care giving a bath, this can be stressful and send them over the edge.

I would make sure to dry him well if he's wet. You can use a hairdryer on low to dry him.

Do provide him with a little extra warmth like a heating pad set on low (covered in old towels or puppy pads). Make sure he's able to move from the heat if he gets to warm.

Gurgling could be due to the crop not emptying. Do you notice a sour or bad odor coming from the beak or what was vomited up?

I'd first work on seeing if he will drink a bit. Get some electrolytes or sugar water into him.
If the crop is not emptying, address that symptom. Likely it's sour even if you don't detect an odor. I'd consider giving an anti-fungal as described in the article.

He's 5 months. Have you treated for worms and/or Coccidiosis?

What do you feed, do you provide crushed granite (Grit) for your birds?

Thank you so much for taking time to try helping us.

We did think it could be his crop but the bubble is more on his left side. According to the diagram, it could be his crop or liver… I think.

When he vomited 2 days ago, it smelt very bad. Just now, I went to check on him and his mouth is open and I can hear some more gargles.

He is not dewormed nor treated for Coccidiosis. I am a first time chicken owner (the house we bought had chickens/ roosters and chicks already and we are learning so much as we go.

We do add grit to their food.

Last night after his epson salt bath, we dried him and put him in a confined area in our basement with some water. I can’t tell is he did drink any water. He did poop a lot. Very light yellow, kind of watery.

I just held him and thought he was snapping out of it because his eyes are open but when I put him back down he just plopped over on the ground. 😔 I picked him up and he did stand up.

He’s still standing with his chin tucked in, almost in a ball.

I’ve attached a picture from just before.
