The greenish color may have been my imagination. Here are pics from this morning. Vet called with labs: normal wbc and rbc, reduced kidney function likely from dehydration. Low glycemic. Probably from not eating. Going to add clavamox and continue gavage. He is a bit more robust today, hanging with flock, but still in the woods. I included his good left side for comparison. I have always gotten sincere help here, so thank you all again.
Last question: vet said he can have meloxicam for inflammation 5 mg every 12 hours. Is there another anti inflammatory that is safe to give, an over the counter? The costs are mounting fast.

I think your gander has an upper respiratory infection, his right eye appears to have discharge and facial swelling is fairly common with upper respiratory infections in birds. It could be a number of things, things like a virus or mycoplasma can commonly cause that.
Usually we use Tylosin for mycoplasma but doxy will help, if it’s some other bacteria Baytril is a good broad spectrum antibiotic.

I think your gander has an upper respiratory infection, his right eye appears to have discharge and facial swelling is fairly common with upper respiratory infections in birds. It could be a number of things, things like a virus or mycoplasma can commonly cause that.
Usually we use Tylosin for mycoplasma but doxy will help, if it’s some other bacteria Baytril is a good broad spectrum antibiotic.

The vet called after conferring with another specialist. She wants to add Clavamox 500 mg twice a day. She did mention mycoplasma. I wonder why she didn’t offer Baytril; that kills everything. I hate to throw antibiotics Willy nilly; I’ll pick up the Rx and hold it a day or two before adding it.

Baytril is a good all around but mycoplasma is less sensitive to it than it is to tylan/Tylosin, doxy, and denegard, it also depends on strain though. Baytril is great as an all around antibiotic so it’s a common choice when it isn’t completely clear what’s going on but some things are just a little out of its ability to kill.

Hooray, Boris the gander had rounded the bend! He is looking and feeling better. Gave his eyes a slosh with boric acid solution (1/4 tsp in half cup RO water), plus gavage of nutrition food and also a meat purée baby food mixed with water. Also 20 mgs of Ibuprofen. He took a long splashy bath this morning after his nursing care. Not quite normal but on the mend. Thank you, I’ll keep you abreast (oops, a pun).
