1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
White silkie, about 9 months old, not sure about weight but does seem a little lighter than the other silkies but I figured because she’s younger? The others are about a year older than her.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She seems lethargic, slightly open-mouth breathing. Eyes closed but moving around and shaking head occasionally. Not so much labored breathing but her mouth appears to have bubbly mucus. No mucus in her nostrils. We brought her inside and I’m only noticing now that she also hasn’t had any feces and I haven’t seen her eat or drink since setting her up in the hospital ward inside (about 10 hours now). Her crop feels completely empty. Not squishy. I don’t feel a hard egg near or around her cloaca. No penguin stance based on what I can see. She also looks to have a white crusty appearance on her face? I noticed this before on some of the silkies but it didn’t seem to affect them. Not sure if this is related to her main issue?
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
I only just noticed yesterday :/
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
Not that I can tell. Everyone else is acting completely normally.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
She is pretty low in the pecking order so I think she was pecked on her comb which is bleeding a little but nothing other than that.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
None
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
We feed them layer crumbles and some bird food (the kind we place in bird feeders), the occasional suet, and cracked corn as treats.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
She hasn’t pooed since I placed her in the hospital ward which was about 10 hours ago since writing this.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
In case it was a bacterial upper respiratory infection I dosed her with amoxicillin, vetrx, and hydrohen for electrolytes…
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Treat myself.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
I’ve attached a few photos and one where you can see the white crusty appearance on her face.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Straw for the run, pine for the coop.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you all!!
