My hen recently started slowing down in activity and as of today wont stand or walk around. She is eating fine, her poop is firm and runny. She is drinking lots of water and at times it comes out of her nose. She can stand briefly, but then sits right back down. I don't feel an egg bulge and her crop was firm yesterday and then empty this morning. She recently got lice so i am buying some dust tonight and I sent out a fecal to the lab to test for parasites. I also started her on Fenbendazole to deworm her and put some vit b complex in her water. She has also lost a bit of weight and sleeping a lot. Am I doing everything right? or should there be more.

Have you checked her for crop issues? Excessive water intake can signal a crop problem. If it's impacted, it might cause the water she drinks to back up. At roosting time, feel the crop. Note hardness or squishiness. Check once again early in the morning before she gets off the perch. If the crop is still full, there's a crop issue.

Leg weakness can signify any number of things. She may have been exposed to a toxin that has caused slight brain damage. Tumors can also cause this.

I doubt she would have an appetite if she had a bacterial infection. But being sleepy is one of the symptoms.

Are there any green things in her poop? You say it's both firm and runny. That needs clarification.

Rule out crop issues first by checking her over now and in the morning.

Thank you for your response, she didn’t make it . I sent her out for necropsy to see if they can tell what happened.

It's so sad when we lose a patient. Yes, each time we get involved trying to help someone save their sick chicken, we become invested in the outcome. So we lost her, too.

Please, please let us know what the necropsy results are by updating this thread. You'll be adding to the great wealth of information and experience that's BYC, and your sorrow can become help for someone else.

yes I feel terrible losing her. I just wish it was more obvious like cats and dogs. I was tempted to run a blood panel too, but I held off. As soon as I get the report back from the lab I will post results in hopes to help others.
