I’ve got a Salmon Faverolle hen that’s nearly a year old that’s always been bottom of the pecking order. I found the flock had a mite infestation on Friday and all got treated with Exzolt on Saturday but Fish, the Faverolle, was worst affected. Since Saturday she has became rather weak and lethargic, she has acting subdues for some time due to the mites which I should have found MUCH MUCH quicker. Ahhh!

She wasn’t eating, so I started giving her a slurry of soaked pellets and raw egg with water, but that was probably too much too quickly according to Chat GPT. She developed some open-mouth breathing after feeding which I think is due to stress from the syringe, but her crop is now soft and squishy as it was flat and empty earlier.

She also had bright green droppings yesterday, which makes me think she hasn’t been eating, No bad smell from her beak and no discharge, i don’t think any infection? She’s still alert, eyes fairly bright, and a bit better than yesterday.

Now I’ve stopped feeding to let her crop settle, just leaving water for her to take herself, with occasional syringing of water to make sure she is taking some. She’s inside, warm, in a quiet, warm space.

At the moment it looks like starvation + mite-related anaemia, with a slowed/overloaded crop from refeeding too quickly-according to Chat GPT.
Could anyone give any pointers as she is rather skinny and unsteady. She will move if encouraged but not very far. Does this diagnosis from ChatGPT sound correct?? I don’t think there is anything else underlying going on but don’t know. Any help welcome!!!

You can keep her regular food in with her. If she gets hungry she may start to eat. If she doesn't start to eat you could try torpedo feeding instead of the tubing which seems to be a lot easier/less stressful.

Creating a sugar water solution might intice her to start drinking on her own.

Have to killed all the mites?

You might consider a little bit of liver to help her recover if she is anemic.

Here is a link to torpedo feeding.

She has her food and water in with her as well as a friend that she treats like her mum, she nestles under all the feathers and sleeps😅 which might help intrude her to eat as well.

I’ll try the torpedo feeding, I’ve never saw that before but looks good, I’ll give it a go!

I’ll also add sugar to the water, I did add some to the water I was giving her in a syringe but I’ll add it to the main water as well.

I have killed the mites with Exzolt (I’m in the UK and this is the licenced product), all the mites should now be dead and will be treated again this Saturday to kill any baby mites that may hatch out.

I’ll maybe go get some liver for her if she needs a bit more help tomorrow.
Thank you!!!
