sick young hen

Chicken Rancher, you are fine.

The update on Violet is a good one. She is much more alert this a.m., and took a small drink on her own! Her eyes are open and alert, she's much stronger in her ability to stand up tall and walk around a bit...AND she's clucking some too. She certainly feels a whole lot better.
Thank you for the info. on the meaning of green poop. I wondered about the switch to the meat builder feed too, and did mix it with the starter at first to make the transition easier, but I'm curious about the diffference as to a grower. What the told me at the feed store, (also on their handout sheet about raising chicks), was the meat builder helps the chickens bulk up and disipates the medicated feed from their system before they go to and egg layer. Hmm.

I did a check around the yard to see what she may have gotten into. We don't use chemicals on anything, save for Osmicote food for plants. I'm wondering if she could have scratched some of this up and eaten it.

Thanks to all for every tip and things to consider. I'll continue to update with Violet!

It's a chicken miracle! She's eating and drinking all on her own!! I'm keeping yogurt in with her crumbles, and vit. and med. in the water for now.

I think it's safe now to ask this question....At what point is it ok to let her go back with the others? I'm hoping to get her out there tomorrow eve.. That would be 4 days on the antibiotics. Any ideas?

Yea!......thanks.....Cathy and Violet Chicken

Lol Rodriguez Poultry - why didn't you work at the feedstores around here?

We needed one like you. I'd have to otherwise agree that most feedstore attendants know pitifully little about poultry. The usual answer is "give them this in their water" (Terramycin, nevermind if it's coccidia).

ON this, looks like a good bunch of advice. I'd just like to add one thing. Coccidiosis doesn't always present with blood in the stool. To me, it seems like it's more often a rustier form of brown poop - a little on the mucousy side versus just watery, but sometimes watery. It reminds me of pudding that is just wrong.

It can often have an orange tint. Yellow usually means bacterial infection rather than protazoan. Frothy yellow usually indicates parasites (worms). Ah the art of poop viewing.

For the cattle raisers among us, this is nothing new.

No joke threehorses! We do alot of poop viewing whether we like to or not, some unexpectedly when it gets kicked up on your face

I never thought of chickens getting worms but my hen's poop was kinda frothy, so maybe I'll check into that. She is doing better so I also wondered if she jsut got a little dehydrated. We've had problems with our watering system lately but got it working good now. They have access to a stream while free ranging but don't seem to have an interest in it yet. Thanx to all, glad your lil' hen is doing much better clucky!
