Sickly duck at local produce store...

. Oh yea call those peta people. They need somthing elce to do other than wondering if people should not eat fish!

I wouldn't call PETA they'd 'save' it by killing it.(according to them death is better than being owned!) don't get me started on PETA. But I might use it as a threat...

So glad to read he's out and safe. Have fun with him.

I just read through this whole thread and am so happy to hear this happy ending--or rather, happy new beginning! Whistles is a very lucky duck! This thread reads like a suspense novel, really. I can't believe that store kept the poor ducky in such terrible conditions and refused to sell him to you. It's despicable that they would subject him to that just so that you couldn't prove that they were wrong, that he wasn't okay. You saved his life, and he's going to be so happy with your family now. He's definitely lucky you came along.

I would hope that more people had donated to Whisteles cause other than I and subhanalah. If so, maybe you should mention their Names, so that people will not think that donations are not a worthless cause. I would like this to carry forward! from one duck to another, until every duck in need can be saved.

I was being statistical about PETA. When I was young, about 30 years ago, I joined their cause. After the first meeting I was done with that. They were talking about freeing all the animals from a lab. Arranging bail for those of us who would be caught. Arrest record, and the ability to help these animals did not co inside as a possibility. These people were just nuts! And later I found that they thought fish should not be eaten, because they had a brain.

Well a fishes brain consists of only a primitive Ganglia. Basically no thought processes, just 2 cells! Enough to breathe and the heart to beat. No thought process. Talk about brainless! I believe PETA is the most brainless of all. Bunch of morons from what I see. All they can do is more harm. They have no real information. Poor saps.

Although I do not wish to comment on the PETA issue, I do wish to confront a common misconception about fish. You say they have no thought process?
Have you ever owned fish? Have you ever tried to form a relationship with said fish? Teach it tricks?
Yeah, a fish can't hug you, but it can learn and repeat for a reward. In order to learn you have to think.

Anyway, I just know how everyone here feels about chickens, and how sweet they are and how smart they are. People say the same thing about your chickens that you are saying about fish. Perhaps it is not the physical brain that connects us all together In a way that transcends the world of "this". Maybe you have made a friend with a fish, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't mean a lot more to some people.

What thread am I on again?

I just came across this blog and I love you for taking that duck. I only have ducks right now but was upset when I saw chicks freezing to death at an outdoor flea market... don't get me wrong, I don't mind animal sales there, but not when the animals are overcrowded, getting hurt, or freezing!

Thank you, Diamond88 and nayeli and welcome to the thread!

I'm really sorry if I don't update in a little while guys! I don't actually come onto this forum very often and have been kept busy with uni work, on top of having to drive three hours every day just getting to uni and home again so it takes a big chunk of my day out.

The best place to go for regular updates is Facebook, if you've got an account - Whistles has his very own page now run by both myself and my partner (so if I don't get time to go online, he does!) and it means I can share on my own timeline and on Whistles' timeline simultaneously from our phones. In case you're viewing the forum from your own mobile and can't see my signature, this is the link: https://www.facebook.com/WhistlesTheDuck

I will try my best to come on here more often though, for the ones who don't use Facebook and sorry for being away again!

There was one other person, but they didn't want to be named so I'll respect their wishes. I was never asking for money, so just having the three people offer donations of their own will was absolutely amazing and very unexpected! Definitely restored my faith in humanity so thank you all for that.

There's not actually much to update with Whistles at the moment! My partner only gets paid monthly so after the last vet bill, we have to wait until next pay comes in so we can take Whistles back for the testing since the vet warned us it could cost anywhere from $400 to $600 with the tests and if he does actually end up needing anti-fungal medication. Not too sure about vet bills in the States, or each of your respective countries, but it's really not cheap in Australia. The initial consult alone was about $90 (my cat is only $50) and that was WITH my student discount (since I'm going through the small animal hospital at my university - but another place I called wanted $137 per bird!

) I'm not sure if that's cheap or not compared to other country vet bills, but we're two students living on one income so we had no choice but to wait until pay day. That's on the 14th though, so the testing will happen next week! And then we can all finally have some peace of mind as to what is actually wrong with his breathing.

We put some feeder fish in Whistles' pool earlier this week to keep him entertained - he absolutely loved them, but his aim is terrible! I'd also read that you have to be careful with worms when it comes to feeding ducks feeder fish, so he was also wormed yesterday. I'm thinking about getting him some live crickets for his next treat the next time we visit the pet store.

Here's some new photos!

This was taken exactly one week after bringing him home:

I also put this together and flipped some of the photos for a better comparison of his one week progress:

And splashing around in his pool:

One thing I was wondering - does anybody know roughly when a Muscovy drake will lose his 'baby' voice and only be able to make those hissing sounds?

I believe it's around 4-5 months old. Wow look how great Whistles looks, that is just so amazing, how could he be sick. feathers are looking better and growing too. Thank you for updating here to, i don't do face book so it's nice to see how well he is doing.

Loved every post on this thread. Reads like a great book. So glad that suffering little duck snagged your compassion! One thing about anti-fungals is that they could suppress the immune system. I have a rescue cat that had severe pneumonia when I found him as a kitten. He had lived out in very bad winter weather. It damaged his trachea so that he wheezes a little all the time. Nothing to be done about it. He's nine years old now.
