I have been giving a hen with an injured leg Poly Vi Sol for the last several days. She has started laying membrane eggs - yesterday she laid two overnite. ( I know they are hers, she is isolated in a cat carrier) Am I overdosing with Poly Vi Sol? I read somewhere here that 4 drops a day is OK for older chickens - or do you think it's the stress of the injury? I have been sprinkling oyster shell on her food, and she gets some scrambled egg and other treats in addition.
Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated!

If you are using the vitamins without iron the only side effect you should see is expensive poop. All the vitamins are water soluble and any overdose will be flushed out by the body and discarded as waste products in their droppings. The soft shelled eggs are most likely a result of the underlying injury or the stress that your girl is suffering. Instead of sprinkling the oyster shell in her food try using the "flour" in the bottom of your bag of oyster shells. Mix the very fine flour in with her food to ensure she is actually eating it. She may or may not be eating the oyster shell chunks. Also can you quarantine her with a friend? Chickens do much better recuperating with a buddy than on their own. It also makes re-introduction the flock much easier when she heals. Two chickens being introduced at the same time means they can share the abuse that the flock is sure to dish out.

Good luck. I hope your girl heals up.

CMV- thanks, I will try that. She is in the run in a cat carrier with the rest of the chickens, and I make sure they get treats and scratch in her area, and the roo checks on her, so it's only at night that she is alone back in the brooder. I think there might be one hen that hangs out close to her more than the others, I could try putting them together at night, too.
