Sides on a Chicken Ladder

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if sides on a coop ladder are effective for making the chickens feel safer? I have four large fowl that I don't think will have a problem with the ladder but I have read that silkies don't like ladders and I also have two of them. So my thought was to place the rungs at the appropriate spacing and add sides to the ladder so it looks sort of like a chute. Any thoughts?

If the ladder is wide enough, they wont fear as much falling of the edge. It's also good to not have the ladder be too steep. I've never tried it out, but sides might work too.
