It has 'hardie backer' but no 'hardie board' or 'hardie sheets'. Are hardie backer and hardie board the same?

No. Hardie backer is what you need when laying tile. It's not exterior siding.

The people at the home improvement store should be able to help you find an appropriate product. :)

I"ll check, and if they don't have hardie board, I'll use T1-11

Aart and 3Killer are correct. Hardiebacker is the original product, intended to go behind tile and similar in wet locations. Kitchen, bath, etc. A superior alternative to drywall, greenboard, wonderboard, etc. While it looks similar (apart from the facing, which is not attractive), it is NOT the same product.

I used pressure treated exterior grade plywood on a tool shed 10+ years ago. it's not been coated with anything. it's turned gray, but is still in good shape.

A HA! There is 'hardie plank' that seems to be for exterior siding. Is this good? Better than T1-11?

When building a coop, can you just use plywood for siding? I mentioned it and was told that plywood wasn't meant to be used for things like that because it will not hold up well. Is this true? Is there something that you need to treat the wood with? Would painting it first help? How does this work?
If the plywood is exterior grade, and not exposed to major humidity and or intense sunlight, and is painted with a quality exterior product, no reason it wouldn’t hold up. Although people have mentioned a lot of different materials for outside of your coop, as well. Which are all great ideas If you are dealing with temperature extreams, one thing to consider is a rigid insulation material under the exterior. Another suggestion for your coop could be a “plank and batten” With palet or other recycled material.
