Siding material, ventilation, and other coop questions.

I would go with the metal. I went with a nice in stock green from Lowe’s. The plastic eventually breaks down and becomes brittle. This leaves you with a potential weakness a predator could take advantage of. I have replace several of these plastic corrugated roofs with metal after leaks from when branches fall and puncture them.

My parents do care about looks, so I'm expecting that we'll probably use something like T1-11 over particle board, but I am almost definitely going to do a metal roof!
Are we still hypothesizing here or is this coop gonna get built before winter?
T11 doesn't need particle board behind it.

I'm 90% sure that this coop is going to get built either before winter or through fall and winter. By 'T1-11 over particle board' I meant that I'd choose T1-11 instead of the particle board. I worded that poorly, sorry.

Ah, OK.
Great! So your parents are onboard with paying for the coop build and keeping the rental hens?

I'm pretty sure that my parents are on board with building a bigger coop-I'll be paying for it, or at least the majority. I have $400 to offer up front (which is a lot for me, I'm trying), then I'll use all my allowance and give them 50% of any income that I get until the rest is payed back. As for the rental hens, it's really their choice whether or not we keep them. We may end up keeping some and not all-2 or 3 out of 4- and we may end up just giving them back. I'm also paying for any chicks-chicks, brooder, chick supplies, etc.

I hung a heat lamp in the coop to plug in when it gets really cold.
I am worried about doing that because I am worried that if the power goes out, they'll get too cold and die, and I also don't want to have a coop fire, which can be caused by heat lamps.
