For those of you that hatch often, what do you do with all the chicks? Are they for your personal flock? Are you breeding for a certain look? Do you sell the chicks?

Aww thanks ya'll! They are cuties... I do see one giving me the stink eye though in that last shot...

Well personally, I am wanting to have a line of white silkie/showgirls and a line of buff silkie/showgirls for DD to do some 4H and fair showing. The genetics and breeding, well I can't help myself where that's concerned. I even find myself making selections from my garden... it's pitful really. Once a breeder always a breeder, doesn't matter what field.

Initially I had a neighbor who wanted some chicks and then some neighbor kids who wanted a silkie each for their birthdays. The neighbor has since had some personal issues and has pulled out. The kids picked out their chicks today and we have banded and colored their heads... LOL!

The ones that don't make the cut due to type etc. I plan to sell as pet birds. I'll probably offer them to people here on byc locally before I go to say craigslist with them. If push comes to shove there are lots of chicken people in this area I am sure I can give any extras away free.

I bought the b/b/s silkies because the first showgirl we hatched was of course black (now she's getting these light colored spots, like reverse splash or something, but that's another thread). And DD will not give her up! So I was going to get some blacks to run with her. Hey what's another color pen, right?? Right???

Actually, she's working on perfecting a new breed of chicken altogether.
Sooooo, how is the shizzle project coming along?

Well I have one rogue that I'm not sure about, that hatched when I was asleep. But I banded the other two when they came out of the eggs so those 2 I am absolutely positive about. One of them has 4 toes on one foot, but that's the only thing I've seen different about them. They do seem to be very vigorous chicks and a bit (small bit) bigger than the silkies, but then the eggs were larger too, so one cannot construe anything from their size other than a bigger egg equals a bigger chick right now.

Oh and the "shizzle" eggs just arrived a couple days ago. I wanted to make sure the hens were clear of the previous roo, so I wanted to wait for eggs.
