signs that chickens are going to lay....

Their combs will turn red, and may become swollen. You might also see them squatting...looks like they're practicing! Mine started visiting the nest box for short periods...sitting for a bit, then leaving, then going back in a few hours & doing it all over again. Good luck! SOOOO much fun collecting your eggs!

I belive there was a post that said something like if you have a roo he will start mating with her which will mean she's soon gonna lay that egg.

My Aracuanas laid at 22 weeks. Their combs got redder and bigger. My chicks also got alot more friendly and relaxed. I have Orpingtons that are 22 weeks and they still haven't laid yet. I was so excited when my first hen laid her first egg in the front of the house, that when I took it into the house to show the kids I dropped it on the floor and broke it!!!!! My family was happy that I was the one that broke it and not them.

This is exactly what my speckled sussex did before she started to lay. It's funny, she continues to do those funny egg squats, whenever she sees me - like it's what she thinks I expect her to do or something. Another thing mine did was start picking up bits of wood chips and adding it to the nest box as if she were making it softer and more homey.

My girls (well ONE) had her comb suddenly grow like half an inch over night - suddely it was HUGE, and then it flopped over - three weeks later she laid an egg! (sometime this past weekend - she was hiding them!)

So far, "the squat" has been the dead giveaway for each of my girls. As soon as they start squatting, the first egg is about 5-7 days away.
