“I also live in the city. Would like 2 or 3 chickens for the eggs and soothing effect that they have on me. Does anyone know if there is such a chicken that makes NO noise? I don't want a rooster so that is not an issue.”

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You and millions of other chicken farmers wish there was a chicken breed that made no noise, but unfortunately no such creature exists. The best you can do is go with pullets of a breed that has a reputation for being relatively quiet (as chickens go). In 50 years of raising chickens, Silkies are the quietest breed I've had. If you want a standard sized breed for laying purposes, Brahmas are probably the quietest breed I've had. Other breeds that are relatively quiet (as chickens go) are Orpingtons, Australorps, Cochins, and Faverolles. Keep in mind however, that there can always be exceptions with any breed. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chickens.

I hope you can find a few that will be relatively quiet for you...they are entertaining and so interesting.

Good luck to you!

glad you have joined us.

I hope you are allowed to have chickens, because they can be noisy at times. But always much quieter than a dog barking.
Personally I love hearing their egg songs.
One of my hens is now crowing at dawn but even the closest neighbors have not heard her :)

Welcome. I am new to the site and raising poultry and was also concerned about noise in the city. I'm now raising quail, which has worked out pretty well so far. Good luck!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Maybe you could start breeding for "muteness." Breed only your quietest hens to the quietest rooster and select only the soft spoken ones - for the next generation. You'd probably have more buyers than chickens if you accomplished that.
