Silent crows?

Do chicks crow silently at first? About a month old, sometimes I see some of them do an open mouth action that looks like crowing, but no sound comes out. Maybe a small chirpy thing, but mostly silent. Without the sound, it kind of looks like they are gagging, but they aren't. They're not sick. So what are they doing? Thanks in advance. I'm learning as I go, here.

They're almost certainly just adjusting their crops.

I agree, they're most likely adjusting their crops. It's normal, nothing to worry about.
