Silkie 411?

Im about to order some silkies from ideal but before i do i have a coupleof questions to all the silkie experst out there?

1. How good of a mother are silkie hens really are? Shure they can hatch eggs but can they protect there chicks?

2. Is it true the roosters will often raise chicks along with the hen?

3. Since there flightless , do they like nesting on the ground or very low boxes?

4. Are the males social(do they get along with other males)?

5. Can they stand hot weather(Texas)?

6. Do they get eaten by everything?

7. Is it safe to remove (trim) the feathers around the eyes to improve vission?

Each bird is different but this is my experience with them.

1. Haven't hatched eggs with silkie so can't answer.

3. Yes, my sisters silkies always nests on the ground under the other chickens nest boxes.

4. She has two roos running together with 8 hens and I've never seen them fight.

5. Don't know about Texas but it's 100 here and they're doing fine.


6. They are very easy prey for stray dogs and such.

7. Yes we've given them haircuts and it doesn't hurt them just makes them look kinda funny. Another option is to band the "hair" up out of their eyes.
