I have a 6 week old silkie chick that has been pecked and made a laceration in her ear. This happened a few days ago, and I cleaned up the wound and she was put back with her flock mates the same age. Today she has scratched her ear and it is now bleeding again after almost a week of healing. Since she is a white silkie, the blood has stained her feathers red and I am unsure how to properly clean the site since it is so close to her eyes and she shakes her head when I try to inspect it.

the actual bleeding is coming from the ear where the feathers coated in blood or supposed to be covering, the blood around is dried and is not part of the wound itself. How do I clean this up and keep her from reopening the wound by scratching?

I'm currently dealing with the same struggle of stopping a silkie chick from scratching at an injury. The best luck I've had so far is wrapping masking tape around their main toe. It let's them still scratch at it without reopening it with their claws.

As for cleaning the wound, if you have someone who can hold her that would do wonders, but if not it will just take a little longer. She'll fight you, but it's a necessary evil. Some q-tips and warm water will work just fine to clear the blood. If she's too squirmy, I would take some wet paper towel or a warm wash cloth and gently hold it to the side of her head to loosen up the dried blood.
