I just hatched a silkie chick out of my group of silkies. This chick's vault is huge! I've never seen one so bit. I only have one rooster, and he is not vaulted, but all my hens are vaulted. Could this mean that this chick is female? All the roosters I have hatched out before have not been vaulted.

Thanks.

I hatched 3 silkies back in mid-Feb and one of them also had a huge vault. Seriously, HUGE! It was like there was a fat lima bean balancing on her head. I was really stressed for her because I figured her brain must be squeezed in really odd ways. Was it all up in the bean? Was part of it in the bean and part of it down where her "normal" skull was? Was the vault just some sort of bony growth? Who knows, but 2 1/2 months on she is the loveliest of the bunch. She has a beautiful full crest and a sweet personality and I've seen no ill-effects from her "mutant" vault. FYI, I talked to the breeder and she said that the chick's father had no vault to speak of, and I am pretty sure that the chick is a girl. Not that that proves anything at all, but it does fit in with your question

. Best of luck with your chick!

A vault is not a sex linked trait. All of my Silkies have vaulted skulls, both the boys and the girls.
I have a chicken with a vaulted skull but I’m almost 100% sure it’s not full silkie. I know it’s not bc most of our chickens are mixed breed but we did have a silkie a few years ago that passed his traits down to the rooster we have now. Is it still possible for that chick to have a vaulted skull or is it something else?
