When Minnie had her broken legs, she was still able to move them... Yes, one leg forward and one leg back. And flapping wings to walk. Classic signs, and
I've had 2 that had coccidiosis before the Marek's signs.

2 years ago, I had a roo that had coccidiosis, then shortly after, developed classic signs of Marek's. Paralysis, one leg forward, one back, an eye turned gray, wings and neck started to be spastic, wasting away,etc. The vet said he believed it was Eastern Equine Encephalitis because the roo had no tumors inside. I agreed at the time.

In the last 2 years, I've had 6 chickens just waste away slowly and die. I blamed other things.

I had a hen that I treated for a broken leg in June. It seemed to be her thigh, but then I thought it was her hip. Anyway, I splinted her, hung her in a sling, and she wasted away anyway. So she was euthanized.

A week or so later, an 8 week old chick got a "broken leg". I put a little cast on it. Also had a slow gasp

A week later, another chick got a "broken leg". Now I'm thinking that they all didn't have broken legs.

chick #3 wasted away a week later.

#4 wasted away a week later.

#5 developed paralysis and a slow gasp, but got better, a few weeks later got paralysis again and died.

#6 wasted away and died a week later.

#7 paralysis. and euthanized


It doesn't have to be just paralysis, paralysis is the most noticeable sign, and most likely can be with one leg forward , one back. But some of mine had no paralysis, just wasted away. I think with those the leg nerves were not affected, but the nerves involved with digestion were inflamed. So nothing moved, and they starved to death.

I hope your little hen had broken legs, but it could be something else.

I think the vitamins would help with them gaining strength which has already been suggested. I am just babbling on here.

Tiki, I don't think your babbling. I've heard that too. I think you're right about the intestinal damage as well. One of my roos that got coccidiosis took 5 months after to catch up to the size he should be.

Tweety is doing better, but I have a few questions. How long do we keep him on Corrid? Do we have to give him anything else after Corrid? How long do we have to wait until we can put him back with our chicks? He's all by him self.

I forgot to mention that the day before Minnie passed away, we took her to the vet, and he took x-rays, and said they were broken....We housed her and Tweety with guineas at first, because Minnie & Tweety was bigger then them, and once they got older with-in a few weeks,, and was slightly bigger then her, they kept knocking her over, which is when I noticed her left leg was twisted back... She was, I think, 6 weeks at the time we moved her out of the guineas brooder.

Then after bringing her home from the vet that evening, I noticed her having blood in her stools. She was acting sleepy, and was laying down, hardly getting up. So we waited till' the next morning, and she started moving around, flopping..

I was quietly taking pictures of her because I wanted pictures before she passed away, I just knew it was going to happen. then my mom took her out, because she was bleeding more heavily, where she passed away while my mom was holding her...

Do you think she had Mereks, or was it from the guineas pushing her around? The vet said she had her left leg had healed... I'm really hoping she didn't have Mereks.. As far as I know, they've never been on the ground here, but I don't know if they have at the person who had them first. They said that they would sit them outside in the sun in a pen, then bring them in at night, but I'm not sure if they meant on the grass, or if they meant on a deck or something.


tiki244, thank you. I think, in a way, that Tweety misses her a little. Because he was with her when we got them(got them from the same person) and has been ever since, up until she passed.

You were right, today is his second day on Corrid, I think. His stool doesn't have as much blood, and he's walking around the brooder a lot more, He's standing up longer.

you won't believe how happy I am that he's doing better. Hopefully he will be back to himself soon...

Hi. I know the vet said both legs were broken. If I had to take a guess, I would still say Marek's. That's a guess. I hope Minnie didn't have it, and hope that Tweety gets better.

I usually keep them on the cocci meds for 5 days. Then just pop him back out when he's better. It's in the ground, so it doesn't matter if he goes back out or not.

To catch coccidiosis, a chick would have to have contact with the ground outside, more than 5 minutes. If they've never been outside, I don't know if I would think it's cocci.

To catch Marek's, a chick would have had to have contact with another bird who carries it, and you never know who carries it if you get your chicks live from somewhere else. It usually shows symptoms at 6-8 weeks, but can at any time.

Blood in stool would make me think they have cocci, if they have been outside at some point on the ground.

I hope he gets better!!!!! Let me know.

First of all corrid you give for 7 days and then you need to give a probiotic after that for ten days. He can go with other chicks a couple of days after he starts the probiotic. ETA: sorry seminole-O it could be 5 but 7 wouldnt hurt with corid its safe.

? Are the other chicks the same age? Do you think they might have it too? Were they together before, or just Tweety and Minnie together?
